Does Mixing Patterns and Colors Scare You?
You are about to enter into one of the most intimidating areas of decorating! I’m hoping to be able to simplify the process for you. Fortunately, our world has become very eclectic, allowing for the mixing and matching more than ever. For example, the pairing of mismatched dining chairs that has become so sheik.
To begin, let’s talk about scale.
There are three sizes to consider: large, medium and small. It’s best to vary the scale size incorporating all three, starting with the large scale item. This should be limited to just one element, possibly an area rug, as the large scale accessory will pull together the look of the room.
Medium and small patterns give you the chance to bring in your personality. You can use more than one medium size pattern, making sure that your color palette blends. Items to consider would be with pillows, throws, window treatments, and even one or more accent chair. Too many small pattern items can look to busy and not allow you to focus. An addition of a smaller accent pillow, let’s say, would bring in that final touch.
Color is important too!
As you can tell from the pictures that I have chosen, color is, of course, another important factor. Basically, you’ll want to choose colors that blend well together. You will probably have several shades of your favorite color and at least two other colors for accessories that will compliment your room. If your not sure if your colors and patterns work together, place them altogether in one area and edit out what clashes or really doesn’t work visually. Also consider companion fabrics that groups colors and patterns together.
Trust your instincts and just have fun with it!
